Prototype:(n) The original or model on which something is based or formed. Now, how is this even a prototype as they skipped the steps that define it and made it a refined production item. This is not an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process to be learned from and then replicated. They did that, tested it, refined it, replicated it, and this is a production model racing car for anyone to buy !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
What do you get for your sixty grand? a 2-liter sealed Mazda 185hp engine on a six-speed sequential gearbox and 1,550 pounds of weight. An adjustable rear wing and 155ph too. So, you can play on most any track in the country, and compete against anyone else in this car and have pure driver talent to race against - in a prototype that everyone else happens to have, that you can't put any prototype development parts on, and you can't do any prototype engine work with.
So, a prototype can be only one, or a few of things but by definition it is used to develop something for widespread use. NASA had a prototype race car, but they used it built a mass production car to race with.

Prototype is the name of the race series, AFAIK it doesn't actually have anything to do with the development state of the car.

It kind of should, though. Maybe they mean "Type Proto" and their spec-built car is a "Proto", whatever that means.

Sure, but if names are now meant to mean something then something's new in the universe. A Nissan Juke isn't juking anything, a Kia Soul has no soul, and Xfinity isn't going beyond. Have a Probe :P

So is this what they are doing now since we aren't going back to the moon?

Yes. Track day cars are the synthesis of Apollo moon landing technology.

I think to sell the Probe on the idea of being spacefaring/futuristic, they should have launched a series of trims for different planets. The Probe Mars - dark brown with a red interior. The Probe Neptune, - sea green and blue outside, with white dashes, and a blue-purple interior...
THIS IS ALL LEADING UP TO A "PROBE URANUS" JOKE BECAUSE BUTTS
